Criminals on Crime: A Review of Research on Offender Decision-Making

This webinar will review academic research on offender decision-making. Dozens of studies have been conducted over time using interview methods to collect qualitative data from offenders. The results of these studies will be presented in a format designed to provide useful practical information for analysts. Both property crimes and violent crimes will be discussed, as well as interview data from offenders in the field and those who were incarcerated at the time of the studies. Come hear from the bad guys on how to choose which house to hit, which weapons to carry, and which methods will keep you from getting caught (at least in theory…).

Presenter

Dr. Michele Covington is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina Upstate. She currently teaches courses on place and crime, quantitative research methods, and cold case investigations. She has published one book along with several research articles and grant reports. She regularly serves as a research partner for community-led crime reduction projects and civilian-supported investigations. Dr. Covington’s current research topics include OSINT for sex trafficking investigations, cold case investigations/body disposal methods, and data accessibility for nonprofits.
